Five classic Windows screensavers, rebuilt for Windows 10 and 11

Ten o'clock in the computer lab, the room gone quiet, and the pipes still growing. These five are the originals, studied and remade from scratch — the same motion, the same colours, at the resolution and refresh rate of the screen in front of you.

3D Pipes screensaver on Windows 11: blue, purple, red and yellow glossy pipes with ball joints winding across a black screen

The one everyone remembers

3D Pipes screensaver

Four glossy pipes grow through the screen at once, turning with ball and elbow joints until the screen is full — then the mosaic wipe clears it and a new set of colours starts. RetroScreen rebuilds the 3D Pipes screensaver for Windows 10 and 11 with the same pacing and the same plastic sheen as the 1998 original, rendered at your monitor's native resolution instead of stretched from 640×480.

3D Maze screensaver: a first-person view down a red-brick corridor with a grey stone-tiled floor

A fresh maze every run

3D Maze screensaver

Red bricks, a grey stone floor and a first-person walk through a maze that is generated fresh each time the screensaver starts. The wanderer follows the left-hand rule, occasionally flips upside down, and never quite finds the exit — exactly as it did on Windows 95 and 98, now smooth at 60 frames per second.

Warp speed, one slider's worth

Starfield screensaver

The Starfield Simulation screensaver: hundreds of white stars streaming toward you out of a black sky. Five hundred stars, no two flights the same, and the speed is yours to set. Every monitor on your desk gets its own starfield rather than one stretched across all of them.

The hypnotic one

Mystify screensaver

Two polygons bounce around the screen, leaving smooth ribbons of colour that drift through the spectrum behind them. The Mystify Your Mind screensaver from Windows 98, anti-aliased and running at your display's refresh rate so the ribbons never tear.

Pixel trail and all

Flying Windows screensaver

The 1992–2001 waving Windows flag flying at you out of the dark, dozens at a time. A small piece of desktop nostalgia for a Windows 11 lock screen — the four-colour flag, the pixel trail behind it, and the way it fills the screen just before the next wave.

The Premium Pack · $19.99 once

Two screensavers that earn their place on your screen.

The classics are for the heart. These two are for the desk: a text screensaver that says something on your behalf, and a clock and weather screensaver that is useful to glance at from across the room. One payment, no subscription, no licence key — and the classics are included.

Text Effects

Your screen, your message.

Type anything — your company name, a note for whoever walks past, a house rule, a line you want to keep in front of you — and this text screensaver brings it on and off screen with the entrance animations everyone knows from PowerPoint.

  • Any font on your PC, any size, any colour - picked with the standard Windows font dialog.
  • Nine entrance animations: Fade, Fly In, Wipe, Split, Zoom, Bounce, Typewriter, Float In and Spin - or let it shuffle.
  • Multi-line text that scales to fit the screen, and lands somewhere new each cycle so nothing burns in.
  • Set it in ten seconds from the normal Screen Saver Settings dialog.
Reception & shop countersYour brand, opening hours, today's specials, the Wi-Fi password.
Shared desks"Back in 10 minutes - leave a note."
Classrooms & labsInstructions that stay up while the room is idle.
Home office"Deep work until 3 PM" - and the family actually reads it.
Text Effects screensaver: 'IOTCRAZY TECHNOLOGIES' in large bold white text, with the second line 'Quality Microcontrollers' still spinning into place letter by letter
Two lines in Segoe UI Bold, 72 pt, mid-animation: the first line has landed, the second is still arriving character by character.
Date Time & Weather

The time, the date and the weather — readable from across the room.

Big, quiet type on a black screen: a clock screensaver with the date and today's weather, in five clean layouts. Your idle monitor becomes the clock and weather station the room never had.

  • Live weather, no account: current conditions, temperature, today's high and low, humidity and wind, refreshed every 30 minutes.
  • Your city or auto-detected, in °C or °F, 12- or 24-hour clock, with or without seconds.
  • Five layouts - Classic, Left Stack, Two-line Clock, Minimal and Weather Card - so it fits a 27-inch monitor or a small second screen.
  • Kind to OLED and plasma: every minute the clock fades out and reappears in a new spot.
Meeting roomsThe wall clock and the weather, on the display already there.
Second monitorGlanceable time while your main screen stays busy.
Kitchen & workshop PCsBig, legible digits from across the room.
Late nightsBlack background, soft grey type. Nothing glares.
Date Time & Weather screensaver, Weather Card layout: 17:20 with seconds, 'Friday, September 18', and a card showing Calgary, 70 degrees, Clear, high 71, low 40, humidity 31 percent, wind 6 mph
Date Time & Weather screensaver, Classic layout
Classic. The date above a large, thin clock, weather in one line underneath.
Date Time & Weather screensaver, Left Stack layout
Left Stack. Anchored to one corner, seconds shown, high and low under the conditions.
Date Time & Weather screensaver, Minimal layout
Minimal. Just the time and the date, nothing else on screen.

Two-line Clock. For a portrait monitor: hours over minutes in big bold digits.

Installation guide

How to install a screensaver on Windows 10 and 11

RetroScreen ships as ordinary Windows screensaver files (.scr). Windows already knows what to do with them — from download to screensaver takes about two minutes.

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit

Any PC with a DirectX 12-capable GPU, including integrated Intel and AMD graphics.

Administrator rights

Needed only for the setup program (it copies files into the Windows folder). The manual method works without them.

Internet access is optional

Only the weather in Date Time & Weather uses it.

Option A — the setup program Recommended

  1. 1 Run RetroScreen_Classic_Setup.exe (the five classics) or RetroScreen_Premium_Setup.exe (Text Effects and Date Time & Weather). Both can be installed side by side. If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway — this appears for any small independent program that has not yet been code-signed.
  2. 2 Accept the administrator prompt. Setup copies the screensavers into C:\Windows\System32 — the only folder Windows lists in Screen Saver Settings — and puts an uninstaller in C:\Program Files\RetroScreen Classic or …\RetroScreen Premium.
  3. 3 On the last page, leave Open Screen Saver Settings now ticked and click Finish. Continue with choosing a screensaver.

Option B — manual install, no admin rights

  1. 1 Unzip the download to a folder that will stay put, for example C:\Users\<you>\RetroScreen. Windows runs the screensaver from wherever the file lives, so don't leave it in Downloads.
  2. 2 Right-click a .scr file — say pipes.scr — and choose Install. Windows opens Screen Saver Settings with that screensaver already selected.
  3. 3 Click OK. Done. Repeat for another file whenever you want to switch.

Prefer to see all seven in the drop-down list? Copy the .scr files into C:\Windows\System32 (this step needs an administrator prompt). Everything in that folder appears in the list automatically.

Choosing a screensaver in Windows

  1. 1 Open Screen Saver Settings:
    • Windows 11: Settings → Personalization → Lock screen → Screen saver.
    • Windows 10: Settings → Personalization → Lock screen → Screen saver settings.
    • Any version: press Win+R, type control desk.cpl,,1 and press Enter.
  2. 2 Pick one from the Screen saver list: 3D Maze, 3D Pipes, Starfield, Mystify, Flying Windows, Text Effects or Date Time & Weather. The little monitor shows a live preview.
  3. 3 Set Wait to how many idle minutes should pass before it starts. Tick On resume, display logon screen if you want your password asked for when you come back.
  4. 4 Click Preview to see it full-screen right now — move the mouse to leave — then OK.

Have more than one monitor? Nothing to set up. Each display runs its own independent copy — its own maze, its own pipes.

Setting up Text Effects Premium

  1. 1 Select Text Effects in Screen Saver Settings and click Settings….
  2. 2 Type your message in the big box. Press Enter for a new line — as many lines as you like; the text is scaled to fit the screen.
  3. 3 Click Font, Size and Color…. This is the standard Windows font dialog: pick any installed font, its style, a size in points, and a colour.
  4. 4 Choose an Entrance animation, or leave Random (changes every cycle) to get a different one each time.
  5. 5 Click OK, then Preview in the Windows dialog to check it.
Text Screensaver Settings dialog with a two-line message typed in, and the Windows Font dialog open in front of it showing Segoe UI, Bold, 72, colour White
Sizes are in points as they would look on a 1080p screen; 4K displays scale up automatically.

Setting up Date Time & Weather Premium

  1. 1 Select Date Time & Weather in Screen Saver Settings and click Settings….
  2. 2 Pick a Layout. Classic and Weather Card suit a single large monitor; Two-line Clock and Minimal read well on a small second screen.
  3. 3 Leave Weather city blank to use your location (detected from your internet connection), or type a city — London, New York, Tokyo. No account, no API key.
  4. 4 Tick the options you want: Show weather, 24-hour clock, Show seconds, and Use Fahrenheit (°F) and mph.
  5. 5 Click OK. The weather appears within a few seconds of the screensaver starting and refreshes every 30 minutes.
Date Time & Weather Settings dialog: a Layout drop-down, a Weather city field, and check boxes for Show weather, 24-hour clock, Show seconds and Use Fahrenheit
Settings are stored per Windows user, so each account on a shared PC can have its own.

Uninstalling

  • Installed with setup: open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find RetroScreen Classic Collection or RetroScreen Premium Pack and choose Uninstall. If the screensaver being removed is the one currently selected, Windows is switched back to None for you.
  • Installed manually: pick a different screensaver in Screen Saver Settings, then delete the .scr files. Saved settings live under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RetroScreen in the registry.

If something doesn't look right

The screensaver starts and immediately closes
Something is nudging the mouse - a wireless mouse on an uneven surface, or a controller sending input. RetroScreen ignores tiny jitters, but a real movement of a few pixels exits, as it should.
Black screen, nothing drawn
Update your graphics driver. RetroScreen needs DirectX 12, which every driver released in the last several years provides.
"Fetching weather…" never goes away
The PC cannot reach the internet, or a firewall is blocking outbound HTTPS. Check the connection and the spelling of the city. The clock keeps working regardless.
Text Effects: the text looks too large or too small
The size is in points for a 1080p screen and scales with your display. Lines too long to fit are shrunk automatically; shorten the text or change the size under Font, Size and Color…
The screensaver is not in the drop-down list
Only files in C:\Windows\System32 are listed. Either copy them there, or right-click the file and choose Install, which selects it directly.

Free Windows screensavers: questions & answers

Are the classic Windows 98 screensavers really free?

Yes. The Classic Collection - 3D Maze, 3D Pipes, Starfield, Mystify and Flying Windows - is a free download with no trial period, no watermark and no nag screen. The paid Premium Pack funds the project; the classics are our thank-you to everyone who remembers them.

Does 3D Pipes work on Windows 11?

Yes. All five classics run on Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit) on any PC with a DirectX 12-capable GPU, which includes the integrated Intel and AMD graphics in every laptop sold in the last decade. They render at the native resolution of your monitor, so 3D Pipes looks sharp on a 4K display rather than stretched.

Is this the original Microsoft software?

No. RetroScreen is an independent project, written from scratch in Rust. No Microsoft files are included - each screensaver was studied and rebuilt so it looks and moves the way you remember. Windows is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation; RetroScreen is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.

How do I install a screensaver on Windows 10 or 11?

Run RetroScreen_Classic_Setup.exe and leave "Open Screen Saver Settings now" ticked, or right-click any .scr file and choose Install. Then pick the screensaver in Windows' own Screen Saver Settings, set the idle time and click OK. The installation guide on this page walks through every step, including how to open Screen Saver Settings on Windows 11.

Do the screensavers support multiple monitors and 4K?

Yes. Each display runs its own independent copy - its own maze, its own pipes - at that display's resolution and DPI, with nothing upscaled. Portrait monitors are handled too.

What is in the Premium Pack?

Two new screensavers: Text Effects, which shows any message you type with nine entrance animations in any font, and Date Time & Weather, a big clock with the date and live weather in five layouts. It costs $19.99 once, includes the Classic Collection and has no subscription.

How do I get the Premium Pack after paying?

There is no licence key to type in. As soon as PayPal confirms the payment, the store e-mails you the download link for RetroScreen_Premium_Setup.exe, and the same link is shown on your order page. Run it and both premium screensavers appear in Screen Saver Settings.

Does Date Time & Weather need the internet?

Only for the weather, which comes from a free public forecast service with no account or API key. Time and date always work; if you turn weather off or you are offline, the clock simply shows without it.

Bring the pipes back.

Five classic Windows 98 screensavers, free, for Windows 10 and 11. One small download, no account, nothing to activate.
